Understanding the Zone Technique: A Holistic Approach to Chiropractic Care

August 21, 20267 min read

At Salt & Light Chiropractic in Post Falls, Idaho, we believe chiropractic care is about more than simply chasing pain. Our goal is to help the body function and adapt better by focusing on the relationship between the spine, brain, and nervous system.

One of the approaches we use in our office is the Zone Technique, a chiropractic method centered around six functional zones of the body. By identifying areas of imbalance and providing specific chiropractic adjustments, Zone Technique gives us a unique framework for providing individualized, neurologically focused care.

What Is the Zone Technique?

The Zone Technique traces its origins to the work of chiropractor Dr. Thurman Fleet in the 1930s and was later developed into its modern form by Dr. Peter Goldman.

The technique is based on a chiropractic model that divides the body's functions into six zones. Each zone represents a different category of body function and is associated within the technique with specific neurological pathways.

The six zones are:

  1. Glandular

  2. Eliminative

  3. Nervous

  4. Digestive

  5. Muscular

  6. Circulatory

Rather than using the same approach for every patient, the Zone Technique gives chiropractors a system for determining which zone to focus on during a particular visit.

The Six Zones of the Body

1. Glandular Zone

The Glandular Zone is associated within the Zone Technique system with the body's glands and their regulation.

This includes glands such as the thyroid and adrenal glands, which play important roles throughout the body.

Within the Zone Technique model, this zone is considered when evaluating how the body is adapting and regulating itself.

2. Eliminative Zone

The Eliminative Zone relates to the body's systems involved in processing and eliminating waste.

This includes structures associated with the kidneys, colon, lungs, and skin.

The Zone Technique considers this another component of overall body function and neurological regulation.

3. Nervous Zone

The Nervous Zone centers around the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

Your nervous system is constantly receiving information, processing it, and coordinating responses throughout your body.

Because chiropractic care focuses heavily on the relationship between spinal function and the nervous system, this is an especially important concept in neurologically focused chiropractic care.

4. Digestive Zone

The Digestive Zone corresponds with structures involved in digestion, including the stomach, intestines, liver, and pancreas.

Digestion is regulated by a complex interaction between the digestive system, nervous system, hormones, and other physiological processes.

Within Zone Technique, this zone provides another framework for evaluating the body's overall function.

5. Muscular Zone

The Muscular Zone involves the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and structures that help us move.

This is an area many chiropractic patients immediately recognize because muscle tension, stiffness, decreased mobility, and physical fatigue are common reasons people initially seek chiropractic care.

Healthy movement requires coordination between the joints, muscles, brain, and nervous system.

6. Circulatory Zone

The Circulatory Zone is associated with the body's circulatory structures, including the heart, arteries, veins, and lymphatic system.

Within the Zone Technique framework, this represents another aspect of how different systems throughout the body work together.

How Does the Zone Technique Work?

A Zone Technique visit begins with an assessment.

The chiropractor evaluates specific points located on the back of the patient's head, known within the technique as zone indicators. These indicators are used within the Zone Technique system to determine which zone will be the focus of that visit.

Once the zone has been identified, the chiropractor performs specific chiropractic adjustments based on the findings of the examination and the needs of the individual patient.

The purpose of the chiropractic adjustment is to improve spinal joint function and provide neurological input through the spine and nervous system.

For patients, the actual experience is generally straightforward. There are no complicated machines or lengthy procedures. The approach is specific, intentional, and individualized to the person being adjusted.

Why We Don't Just Chase Symptoms

One of the reasons we appreciate the Zone Technique at Salt & Light Chiropractic is its emphasis on looking beyond where someone happens to hurt that day.

Pain is important, but pain doesn't always tell the entire story.

For example, someone may come into our office because their lower back hurts. Another patient may be dealing with recurring neck tension. Someone else may simply want to maintain their mobility and continue feeling their best.

Those patients don't necessarily need identical care.

Our job as chiropractors is to evaluate the individual in front of us and determine what we find rather than simply adjusting wherever someone points to pain.

Zone Technique provides one framework we can use as part of that process.

The Brain-Body Connection

Your brain and body are constantly communicating.

Every movement you make requires your nervous system to receive sensory information, process that information, and coordinate an appropriate response.

Your spine plays an important role in this process because it houses and protects the spinal cord while spinal joints, muscles, and surrounding tissues continually provide sensory information to the nervous system.

This brain-body relationship is one reason our approach at Salt & Light Chiropractic is neurologically focused.

Chiropractic adjustments aren't simply about making something "crack." They provide mechanical and sensory input to the joints and nervous system while improving movement in areas that have been identified as restricted.

Why Patients Choose Zone Technique

People are often drawn to the Zone Technique because it provides an individualized approach to chiropractic care.

Some of the features our patients appreciate include:

  • Whole-body perspective: We aren't limited to looking only at the area where you're experiencing discomfort.

  • Individualized care: The focus of an adjustment can vary based on the findings of that visit.

  • Gentle approach: Chiropractic care can be adapted to the individual patient's age, comfort, and needs.

  • Neurologically focused: The technique emphasizes the relationship between the brain, nervous system, spine, and body.

  • Function focused: Our goal is to help people move and function well rather than simply chasing symptoms.

What Can You Expect After an Adjustment?

Everyone responds differently to chiropractic care.

Some patients notice changes in mobility or muscle tension. Others simply report that they feel more relaxed following an adjustment.

Your response will depend on your individual health, condition, activity level, and reason for seeking chiropractic care.

We don't believe in promising that one adjustment will fix every problem. Instead, we evaluate each patient individually and make recommendations based on what we find.

Is Zone Technique Only for People in Pain?

No.

While pain is one of the most common reasons people first visit a chiropractor, not everyone who receives chiropractic care is experiencing significant pain.

Some people choose chiropractic care because they want to maintain mobility, stay active, or make spinal health part of their overall wellness routine.

This is especially relevant for active families, athletes, physically demanding workers, pregnant moms, children, and people who simply want to continue doing the things they enjoy.

Zone Technique for Families

One of the things we love about chiropractic is that care can be adapted for different stages of life.

The amount of force and type of technique used for an adult isn't necessarily the same as what would be appropriate for a child, infant, older adult, or pregnant patient.

At Salt & Light Chiropractic, care is individualized based on the person in front of us.

Our goal is to create an environment where families feel comfortable asking questions, understanding their care, and being actively involved in decisions about their health.
